Imagine being fired because of something somebody else said. Dr. Howard Bauchner, then editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Bauchner was forced to resign for a comment on racism made by another JAMA editor in a since-deleted podcast. The other JAMA editor said “Structural racism is an unfortunate term. Personally, I think taking racism out of the conversation will help. Many of us are offended by the concept that we are racist.”

In response,  Bauchner said “I remain profoundly disappointed in myself for the lapses that led to the publishing of the tweet and podcast,” in a statement. “Although I did not write or even see the tweet, or create the podcast, as editor-in-chief, I am ultimately responsible for them.”

Call the JAMA Editorial Office and express support for  Bauchner at 312-464-4444. Hours: 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM CT Monday through Friday.
