Actress and author Candace Cameron Bure, most well-known for starring as DJ Tanner in the family sitcoms Full House and Fuller House, is also known for her outspoken Christian views and focus on conservative, family values.
Appearing on Dancing with the Stars in 2014, Bure proudly stated:
“I’m a Christian. My life revolves around my relationship with Jesus Christ. So with the overall tone of the dance and the costumes, I’m not going to take a backseat. My voice will definitely be heard.”
Bure’s beliefs have placed her in the crosshairs of leftist, woke activists for years.
For example, in 2021, cancel culture came after her because she was following center-right social media accounts.
Over the last decade Bure has been the lead in dozens of Hallmark movies – from Christmas specials to romantic comedies to murder mysteries – to much public acclaim. Bure is very specific about the roles she takes, refusing to participate in films with plot lines or roles that go against her personal beliefs.
In April of this year she left Hallmark to join a new network founded by the former president and CEO of Crown Media Family Networks (the parent company of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies), GAC Media.
Moving to GAC Media also gave Bure a big promotion – in addition to starring in numerous films for the network, she was named its Chief Creative Officer, giving her the opportunity to influence the themes of all of the network’s productions.
The Wall Street Journal recently asked her for more information on her departure from Hallmark.
She stated “My heart wants to tell stories that have more meaning and purpose and depth behind them. I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment.“
The Journal followed up by asking if, in her new role, she would feature LGBTQ storylines.
Her response was, “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core.”
These remarks resonated with millions of Americans. However, it did not with a number of Hollywood stars who called Bure everything from “disgusting” to “bigoted.”
JoJo Siwa, a child star who came out as gay earlier this year, called it “rude and hurtful.”
This has also sparked outrage across social media, with users calling for a boycott of GAC, its advertisers, and Bure herself.
Private television networks should be able to create content that their audience demands – and that aligns with their values, especially if the content in no way disparages or hurts those with opposing beliefs.
